BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

One has to wonder how a homeless man, woman or teen-ager, who hadn’t eaten for two or more days, felt about the thoughtless people, with full bellies, throwing fruitcakes from a Bangor fourth-story window down on a target with self-promoting pictures — under the pretense of fund raising (BDN, Dec. 19).

To destroy food, while others in the community are going hungry, isn’t right. The promotors of the event were out to lunch when they came up with this advertising scheme. The unintentional consequence is but a lame excuse.

We, as a community, should look out for one another and not highlight the differences among us. Hunger is painful, it is weakening and diminishes our self-worth. We should be sensitive to all segments of society and tread lightly.

The event was made worse by the Fourth Estate’s philosophy that anything and everything is newsworth and reportable. The Bangor Daily News’ coverage with extensive photos and expansive write-up only emphasized society’s failures. We can ponder what we have become, but sooner or later we will conclude it is what we are. George Chebba Hampden
