Antibody producer’s barn burns, goats saved

WINDHAM – Dozens of goats escaped injury early Monday in a pre-dawn fire that swept through a barn at the farm facility of Strategic BioSolutions.

Firefighters from Windham and neighboring towns kept the flames from spreading to other buildings at the Anderson Road site.

There were no injuries to firefighters and all of the 90 goats in the building were rescued, said Windham Fire Chief Charles Hammond.

The hardest part about fighting the blaze was getting water to the scene, officials said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but Hammond and the company said it appeared to be accidental.

The chief estimated the loss at between $125,000 and $150,000.

Strategic BioSolutions said it is an antibody production company and does not engage in animal experimentation.
