Acadia park employees, volunteer earn awards

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK – Two park employees and one volunteer have received this year’s annual awards for outstanding service.

Bill Weidner received the 2001 George B. Dorr Award for permanent employee of the year.

The Gouldsboro man has been stationed at the Schoodic District of the park since 1977.

As the only ranger assigned to this area, Weidner is responsible for the entire law enforcement operation.

He also works with local school groups and assists with maintenance projects. Weidner is a visible presence in the local community, working to ensure positive communications with area residents and municipalities.

Florence “Maggie” Dalzell of Southwest Harbor received the 2001 Ace Savage Award for seasonal employee of the year. Dalzell began working in the park’s maintenance division in 1971. She is responsible for cleaning the campground at Seawall. Dalzell is known for her loyalty, good nature and excellent work skills.

The 2001 Champlain Award for volunteer of the year went to Sarah Baldyga. The Bar Harbor woman volunteered on the park’s trail crew this summer and fall, contributing more than 800 hours. She spent most of her time on the Jordan Pond Trail project, where she learned the demanding art of rock work, including use of an overhead rigging system.

The guidelines for the awards are exceptional service to Acadia and the public, as well as dedication to the park mission.
