Whitneyville Library serves schools, people in surrounding community

WHITNEYVILLE — According to an announcement by John Bodger, librarian at the Whitneyville Library, delivery of library books to the Machias Valley Christian School, the Wesley Corner School, and to the Seedlings and Saplings Preschool, taught by Bonnie Phipps in the Kennebec District of Machias, has begun.

Both the Dublin Hill Child’s Center and the Machias Community Child Center on Free Street in Machias exchange books twice a month year round. Service to the Jonesboro Elementary School and the Rose M. Gaffney School in Machias will resume next week, with Addie Dennison as storyteller.

Other schools served by the Whitneyville Library include Head Start in East Machias, the Washington County Children’s Program, Nancy Look’s preschool located in Jonesboro, the Edmunds School, and the Elm Street School in East Machias.

In addition, Jacqueline Moreau of Jonesboro borrows books from the library for students at the Woodland Christian School.

Adults borrowed 3,125 books or magazines from the Whitneyville Library during the first eight months of 1990, compared to 2,728 from January to August in 1989. The total number of adult books and magazines borrowed in 1989 was 3,807.

New books for adults include: “Burden of Proof”; “Memories of Midnight”; “Women in His Life”; “Message from Nam”; “4 Past Midnight”; “September”; “Get Shorty”; “Hammer Heads”; “Bourne Ultimatum”; “Gettysburg”; “Murderer Next Door”; “Olivia & Jai”; “Mountain Laurel”; “Current Affairs”; “High and Lonely Road”; “Modern Women”; “Rules of the Road”; “4th Durango”; “9th Buddha”; “Wait for What Will Come”; “Snow Falcon”; “Brotherhood of the Tomb”; “Secret Singing”; “Wolf of the Slaughter”; “Politics of the Rich & Poor”; “Wild Justice”; “Victoria”; “Men at Work”; “The Craft of Baseball”; “My World Is An Island”; and “Listening Woman.”

Whitneyville Library has never had a non-resident fee, and only about half of the adult borrowers live in the town. Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday; 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; closed all holidays. The phone number is 255-8077.
