Witches sweep away Nokomis> Brewer has `complete package’

BREWER – Even if Mother Nature couldn’t make up her mind about the weather, the Brewer softball team knew exactly what it wanted to do during Saturday’s doubleheader against Nokomis of Newport.

With the skies alternately dark and light, rain spitting onto Coffin Field despite bright sunshine and a chilly wind keeping spectators in their cars or running for sweatshirts, the Witches provided the heat as they pounded out 27 hits to sweep the Warriors 12-1 in the opener and 13-0 in a five-inning nightcap.

Brewer got solid fielding and pitching – not to mention seven extra-base hits – all of which were lacking in the Witches’ loss to Old Town Thursday, when they managed just one run.

“We hit today,” Brewer coach Kelly Cookson said. “If we can get on base we can force them to play defense. Today we had the complete package, the pitching, hitting and baserunning.”

Nokomis, on the other hand, looked shaky in the field during the first game. The Warriors tallied nine errors in the opener.

Brewer’s Tami Corey showed off fine control with low, inside pitches to win the first game for the Witches. She fanned four Warriors and got clutch strikeouts when she needed them, including a third inning, bases-loaded strikeout.

Corey also singled and doubled twice, including a shot to right-center in the fifth that scored Mandy Brigalli. Two batters later, Kristen Frey lined a triple into center field to bring in Corey, and Frey scored on a Leslie Trott single.

“I think she might have been tired but I like low, outside pitches,” Corey said of the throws Nokomis pitcher Amanda Dorman offered up.

Brewer also scored three in the first when Trott doubled to score Frey and Trott scored on an outfield error. Katie LaChance smacked a double to bring in Kristy Pluard.

In the seventh, Corey hit her second double and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Allison Wing.

Nokomis got its only run in the second inning, when Kim Pushor reached first on a fielding error and scored on a Rachel Henderson single into right field.

With the bases loaded, Corey got Carrie Clark to ground out and end the inning.

In the second game, Frey and Corey traded places and Frey held Nokomis to three singles with a combination of fastballs and changeups, aided by a stellar Brewer defense that did not commit an error.

“I think we’re just more confident than we have been the past couple of games,” Frey said.

Frey’s second triple of the day came in a three-run fourth inning, when she smacked the ball to almost the same spot as her first one. Corey and Allison Wing both scored on the hit.

Trott was a hero in the second inning, when Brewer racked up six runs to take a 7-0 lead. She lined a double into deep center field, driving in Corey and Wing, but was tagged out trying for third base.

“Once one person starts [hitting] it’s just contagious,” Cookson said. “It started in that first game and it just continued through the second game.”

Andrea Pelkey, Wendy Winslow and Erica Bacon each singled for Nokomis, which was able to keep things in the field a little more under control than the the first game. But it didn’t help the Warriors that Dorman, who started the second game and pitched most of the first, was visibly frustrated. And Pelkey, Pushor and Hope Kurro – the best hitters in the Warriors lineup – combined for just four hits in the two games.

“Whenever you pitch two games you’re going to get tired,” Nokomis coach Tenley Libby said. “Our hitting was off, the defense never got a good start in the first game. It just seems like it wasn’t our night.”
