Tom Connolly’s commentary (BDN, July 11-12) contained some inaccuracies. The first one was his premise that Maine has an income problem. It should have said, “Maine has a high tax problem.”

The next inaccurancy was the premise, “average income too low is the cause of high taxes.” It should have said, “high state spending is the cause of high taxes.”

Economics 101 taught me government produces or adds nothing to the economy. Government gets its income from what business produces and adds to the economy.

Businesses go to low-tax states. Any job is better than no job. This produces income for the state. Reducing practical strategy for long-term relief in Maine.

Before a solution to a problem can be proposed, the problem must be correctly identified.
