An overcooked meal?

Just a thought about the comments of Peter Welch of Bangor (BDN letter, Aug. 10) who thought Gov. Angus King’s idea for a lobster bash was an overcooked meal from the taxpayers of Maine.

I felt the hard-working crews of Bangor Hydro and Central Maine Power did an excellent job, but if I were one of them it would make no beef to me who was sent in to give us backup when we could see what was ahead of us.

In regard to the out-of-state crews’ wages, it is fact all Maine employees have to accept. Wages have always been higher out of state. If the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, then move.

I do not see any reason that the out-of-state crews should have worked anymore hours more than they normally do back home. It was they who left their own families more than 500 to 700 miles away and maybe they also had to spend a night in a cold motel without heat or lights.

Our own Maine born and bred workers are a tough breed. I do not think any of them complained about a couple of Twinkies when they had their own home cooking nearby.

I heard of floods in the Midwest and tornadoes in Kansas and Texas and Oklahoma. I do not recall the National Guard being invited for a steak feed. Jim Koritzky Bangor
