Stevens hoop squeezes WA past ‘Guagus Off-balance jumper wins game

HARRINGTON – Whitney Stevens nailed an off-balance, 15-foot jumper from the right side with three seconds remaining to propel Washington Academy of East Machias past Narraguagus of Harrington 85-83 in boys’ hoop action Saturday.

The Raiders overcame a 10-point halftime deficit, outscoring Narraguagus 26-16 in the third quarter behind nine points from Stevens and eight from Bobby Richardson.

Richardson finished with 27 points and Stevens had 26. Nick Reynolds aided the cause with 14 points.

Brandon Emerson led Narraguagus with 24 points and Luke Shaw and Darren Fraser added 18 apiece. Steven Knapp pitched in with 11 points.

At the Bangor Auditorium, Ryan Graves tossed in 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to help Presque Isle hold off John Bapst.

The Wildcats outscored the Crusaders 18-8 in the third period to overcome a three point halftime deficit. Nick Casavant scored eight of Presque Isle’s points in the third.

Casavant finished with 14 points and Fred Bird chipped in with 12.

Billy Brewer notched two goals and an assist and Darren Carlisle scored two goals to lead the Wildcats. Trevor Graves added a goal and Anthony Bohovich and Ben Lynch contributed assists.

Bryan Fowler and Sean Daigle combined to stop 15 of 22 John Bapst attempts.
