First family reading

Public radio has just told its listeners the titles of some of the books a Martha’s Vineyard bookstore sent — unrequested! — to the Clintons for their vacation time reading. I trust the Clintons packed other reading material aboard Air Force One.

The Clintons are known to be intelligent, omniverous readers and were I the owner of a Vineyard bookstore, my gifts to them would have included:

Max Kennedy’s recent memoir of his father’s (Robert) abbreviated career in the service of his country.

The Naval Institute’s recently published biography of Adm. Edward Alsberg, U.S. Navy salvage expert, a true hero in his country’s service.

Diane Ackerman’s “A Natural History of the Senses.”

I feel each member of our first family would have enjoyed these volumes. Certainly they have outgrown Judy Blum, if indeed persons of their intelligence would ever have read such. Dorothy Laureat Southwest Harbor
