Two hurt in crash at Brewer intersection> Both cars demolished; police investigating

Two women were injured Tuesday afternoon in a two-car accident at the intersection of State and Main streets in Brewer.

Michael Sullivan, 23, of Massachusetts was driving along Main Street when his car was struck by a car driven by Kendra Laffey, 28, of Bangor, who was driving up State Street, according to Brewer police Officer Roger Hershey.

Carol Cunningham, 21, of Clifton, a passenger in Sullivan’s 1989 Oldsmobile, and Laffey were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where they were treated. They were later released.

Sullivan’s car and Laffey’s 1989 Mercury were demolished in the 3:30 p.m. crash. Sullivan and Cunningham said they were wearing seat belts. Hershey was unable to interview Laffey on Tuesday and said he didn’t know if she was wearing a seat belt.

Hershey said the accident remained under investigation. —-

The price of cigarettes may have gone up for two women who were shopping at the Bangor Wal-Mart on Monday afternoon.

A Wal-Mart store detective reported to Bangor police that he saw Jackie Bosse, 18, of Oxford, Mass., attempt to conceal three packs of Marlboro cigarettes down the front of her pants and her companion, Annie L. Cammack, 19, of Ellsworth, place two packs of Marlboro cigarettes in her left vest pocket.

According to Bangor police Officer Allen Hayden’s report, the Wal-Mart detective stopped the two women after they allegedly passed the cash registers without paying. The store detective told Hayden that when Bosse took the three packs of cigarettes out of her pants, he also recovered a pair of tweezers she hadn’t paid for.

Wal-Mart placed the value of the items at $12.31. Both women were issued theft summonses. —-

A Charles Street man was arrested by Bangor police early Monday evening for allegedly assaulting a woman.

William E. Eberhart Jr., 36, was charged with assault after the woman told Officers Edward Potter and Paul Kenison that Eberhart had hit her over the head with a broken tabletop and repeatedly kicked her on the head.

Kenison reported that when he and Potter arrived at the apartment building, they found the woman outside crying. Asked by Potter if Eberhart had assaulted her, she said yes and that she only wanted Eberhart to leave.

She said she had been sewing curtains when Eberhart, who had been fixing the toilet, became angry and threw an ironing board into a hallway before going into a rage and attacking her, Kenison reported.

Eberhart then told the woman to pack her things and leave, police said. After she packed a garbage bag, she left and told a neighbor to call the police.

Potter reported that Eberhart said they had argued over her cleanliness in the apartment — or lack thereof — but that he had not assaulted her.

Told that he was under arrest, Eberhart resisted when Potter tried to handcuff him, Potter reported. Police asked that as part of his bail conditions, Eberhart be prohibited from returning to the apartment and that he not consume alcohol.
