Winslow, Skowhegan lead advance to semis

Defending state Class B champion Winslow, the second seed in Eastern Maine Class B, moved into the semifinals Thursday with a convincing 4-0 win over visiting Hermon, the seventh seed. They will now face sixth seed Camden-Rockport, which upset No. 3 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 2-1.

In Class A quarterfinals, No. 2 Skowhegan blanked No. 7 Brunswick 2-0 to set up a semifinal with KVAC rival and third seed Cony of Augusta, a 3-0 winner over Nokomis of Newport, the sixth seed.

In Class C, No. 2 Dexter nipped No. 7 Orono 1-0 and No. 3 Hall-Dale of Hallowell eliminated No. 6 Central of East Corinth 4-0.

All field hockey semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday.

Class A

Cony 3, Nokomis 0

At Augusta, Lori Welch scored all three goals to lead the Cony Rams.

Welch’s first goal came off a Holly Cameron assist with 27:50 left in the second half. Her second goal was unassisted three minutes later and her third goal came off assists from Kim Louten and Johanna Morrison with 20 seconds left in the game. Carrie Morin made two saves on four shots for 11-2-2 Cony.

Veronica Gilbert stopped 10 of 18 shots for 8-6-1 Nokomis of Newport.

Skowhegan 1, Brunswick 0

At Skowhegan, Leia Smithner scored with 15 minutes left off a pass from Kim Leo to propel the Indians.

Skowhegan’s defensive play paved the way for the win as goalie Fawn Albert didn’t face a shot for 12-2-1 Skowhegan.

Amy Carroll turned away nine of 10 shots for 8-7 Brunswick.

Class B

Winslow 4, Hermon 0

At Winslow, Casie Sullivan scored twice and goalie Emily Roy stopped all five shots she faced as the Black Raiders earned the win.

Katie Souviney assisted on Sullivan’s first goal that set up a 1-0 lead at the half. Krisy Ferran scored a goal and assisted on Sullivan’s second goal and Ashley Sennett added a goal for 15-0 Winslow.

Kacie Hutchinson made seven saves on 11 shots as Hermon finished the season at 6-7-2.

Class C

Hall-Dale 4, Central 0

At Hallowell, Kate Lane scored two goals in the first six minutes of the second half to break a scoreless tie.

Lane’s goals were assisted by Kim Stowers and Courtney Davis, respectively. Angie White made it 3-0 when she netted a goal off a Lane pass. Kim Boulier added a goal off an assist from Denise Castonguay. Emily Garofalo didn’t face a shot for 10-2-3 Hall-Dale.

Jen Greatorex made 11 saves on 16 shots for 4-6-5 Central of East Corinth.
