Jonathan Stevens (BDN letter, Nov. 17) was upset because the student at Hampden Academy was written about in the Bangor Daily News for substance abuse. If the so-called student athlete wants credit for his accomplishments on the field, he also has to be made accountable for the deeds he does off the field. True student athletes are role models on and off the field. Children look up to them and model themselves after them. Whether athletes are paid millions or nothing, they still have an obligation to be good citizens.
As the parent of a true student athlete, who worked hard on and off the field for his accomplishments, it enrages me to think Mr. Stevens would like to see this Hampden Academy student be treated like he did nothing wrong and undermine what true student athletes have accomplished.
