Brooks sparks Broncs Hampden tops Foxcroft 8-2

BREWER – Mike Brooks, senior right wing for the Hampden Academy hockey team, figures the makeup of his line makes a lot of sense. Foxcroft Academy’s Ponies would concur.

“I’m on a line with my brother [freshman left wing Kevin] and my good friend [senior center Patrick Bailey],” said Brooks, who combined with his linemates for four goals and six assists to lead Hampden to an 8-2 win over the Ponies at T.J. Ryan Arena Wednesday night.

Mike Brooks had two goals and two assists, Kevin Brooks notched two goals and an assist, and Bailey had three assists as Hampden improved to 5-5. Foxcroft fell to 1-8.

The Broncos, according to Bailey, played a “good overall game. We came here to skate and that’s what we did.”

Kevin Brooks opened the scoring 4:47 into the game and brother Mike added goals 3:25 late in the period as the Broncos took a lead they would never relinquish.

Junior center Greg Taylor had a pair of goals and two assists, senior defenseman Peter Macone contributed a goal and two assists before a 10-minute misconduct ended his night early, and the other goal came off the stick of senior right wing Colin Ingram. Greg Brown, a senior right wing, added a pair of assists and junior goalie Garrett Macgowan finished with 11 saves.

Center Corey Beaulieu and left wing Brandon Johnson, who are senior linemates, scored for Foxcroft and freshman goalie Dan Perkins stopped 42 shots.

The Broncos were assessed three 10-minute misconducts with Adam Standley and Taylor joining Macone in that department.

“I thought our team played well. They came out with the high intensity that we need,” said Bronco coach Tom King. “But I was very disappointed with our penalties. There was no reason for it. Our kids should have known better. We will straighten that out.”

Kevin Brooks’ game-opening goal came off the rebound of his brother’s short wrister after he had come out of the corner.

Kevin Brooks said when his brother came out front with the puck, he knew he had to get free of a defenseman’s check for a possible rebound and that’s what happened.

The next goal was a beauty and came off a faceoff.

Kevin Brooks won the draw back to Bailey at the top of the circle and he threaded a pass across to Mike Brooks at the far post for an easy re-direction.

“We’ve been working a lot on faceoffs in practice,” said Bailey.

Mike Brooks’ next goal came off his own rebound as Perkins laid his stick along the ice to make the initial save only to have Brooks jam the rebound behind him.

Hampden used its superior speed and strength to outshoot Foxcroft 23-3 in the first period.

Taylor made it 4-0 1:26 into the second period with a rising snap shot from a tough angle but Beaulieu with a breakaway goal as he flipped the puck over Macgowan’s glove for his 11th goal of the season.

But a high sticking penalty on FA’s Ethan Annis 42 seconds later gave Hampden a power play and Ingram converted a Brown pass with a 12-footer from the low slot to Perkins’ right.

Macone made it 6-1 with a high snap shot from the right point that deflected in front.

Johnson got one back with a power play tip-in of an Annis shot from the right point but Kevin Brooks answered 28 seconds later and with just eight seconds left in the middle period. He beat Perkins with a slap shot from the left circle.

Taylor capped the scoring with the only goal in the final period.

“Hampden made a lot of very good passes,” said freshman Perkins, who played well in defeat.

Foxcroft coach John McNulty said his team didn’t play well.

“We didn’t have a good night,” said McNulty. “We didn’t play the body and didn’t forecheck.”
