Grenier stops 20 to help Wildcats shut out Stearns

HOULTON – Darren Carlisle and Andy Beaulieu tallied two goals and an assist apiece to lead Presque Isle to a 4-0 high school hockey win over Stearns at Millar Arena on Wednesday.

Joe Grenier made 20 saves on 20 shots for the 11-6 Wildcats.

Nick Simon made 23 saves on 27 shots for 4-10 Stearns of Millinocket.

John Bapst 2, Brewer 1 (OT)

At H.O. Bouchard Arena in Brewer, Jon Rudnicki’s unassisted goal in overtime gave the Crusaders an upset win.

Rudnicki also assisted on Kyle Maynard’s goal for 4-10-1 John Bapst. Chris Todd added an assist while Dominic Dinardo made 27 saves on 28 shots.

Jimmy Morin scored off assists from Robbie Hayes and Ryan Largay for 10-7 Brewer. Rob Elliott made 20 saves on 22 shots.

Boys basketball

Nokomis 82, Hampden 72

At Newport, Ryan McLellan’s 23-point effort helped the Warriors beat the Broncos.

Trenton Estes tossed in 22 points for Nokomis, while Luke Hayden provided 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Owen Caron led Hampden with 17 points and nine rebounds, Adam Russell contributed 13 points and five blocked shots, and Ben Keller added 10 points. Justin DiFrederico chipped in with five steals.

At the Bangor Auditorium, Ned Payne came off a screen on an inbounds play and hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer from the baseline to lift the Crusaders to victory.

Payne finished with 18 points for John Bapst, which had trailed the entire game. Zev Myerowitz scored 12 of his 14 points in the Crusaders’ 28-point fourth quarter, helping them erase an 11-point deficit .

Jesse McCree scored 16 points for John Bapst.

Shawn Kenniston poured in a game-high 25 points for Old Town. Brian Tewhey netted 16.

At the Bangor Auditorium, Kasey Spencer poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the Indians to the overtime victory.

Renee Thibodeau had nine for the winners. Old Town trailed the Crusaders 8-0 to start the game, then went into a 2-3 zone, and shut them out for the rest of the period, holding them to 20 percent shooting from the floor in the game (16-60).

The Indians hit a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining before Nikki Novak broke the Indian press and sent it to overtime. Old Town went 10 for 10 from the line in the fourth and overtime combined to put Bapst away.

Stephanie Sockbeson led the way for the Crusaders with 16 points while Christina Rich added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Margaret Bleauvelt notched 10 for the Cougars. Rachel Yates, who has been battling tendinitis in her quad all season long, had just four points.

Ashley Gosline paced the Tigers with 11 points.
