Broadcasters can pack more into new signal

Going to digital mode gives broadcasters the ability, roughly speaking, to pack 5 pounds of TV programming into a 3-pound bag.

Analog signals cannot be compressed as well as digital signals. So broadcasters can get much more information within the same band width.

Another advantage is that digital is virtually immune from some of the distortion problems associated with analog.

Digital produces a better picture, better sound, and a means to carry data as the age of interactive TV dawns.
