WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Maine vs. New Hampshire

Time, site: Sunday, 1 p.m.; Alfond Arena, Orono

Records: Maine 10-7 (3-3 America East), New Hampshire 10-7 (4-2 )

Series, last meeting: Maine leads 31-14, UM won 69-42 on Feb. 11, 2001

Key players: Maine – 6-1 F Heather Ernest (12.7 ppg, 6.8 rpg), 5-7 G Missy Traversi (10.5 ppg, 2.7 apg), 5-9 G Melissa Heon (9.3 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.9 spg), 6-0 F Monica Peterson (8.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg), 6-1 G/F Julie Veilleux (7.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg), 5-7 G Kim Corbitt (6.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.2 apg); New Hampshire – 6-1 F Aubrey Danen (11.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg), 6-3 C Maren Matthias (10.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.2 bpg), 5-4 G Heidi Plencner (10.6 ppg, 3.3 apg, 2.8 spg), 6-3 C Anna Matthias (7.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg), 5-4 G Colleen Mullen (6.8 ppg, 3.2 apg)

Outlook: The well-rested Bears encounter a New Hampshire squad that has won four straight, including Wednesday’s 79-67 win over Hartford. While the Wildcats have plenty of balance, UMaine must deal with the considerable post presence of the Matthias sisters. The Bears’ frontcourt players have been prone to foul trouble and generally give up two or three inches to opponents. UMaine needs scoring production from the guards to help take the pressure off the inside players. The ‘Cats complement their inside game with 3-point threats in Plencner and Mullen. The Bears, who rank second in FG percentage defense (.369) also look to continue their strong rebounding (plus-6.5 margin).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Maine vs. New Hampshire

Time, site: 2 p.m. Sunday, Lundholm Gymnasium, Durham, N.H.

Records: Maine 6-11 (3-3 America East), New Hampshire 7-11 (4-3)

Series, last meeting: Maine leads 98-59; Maine won 86-84 on 2/11/01

Key players: Maine – 6-3 G Errick Greene (19.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg), 7-0 C Justin Rowe (13.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 4.18 bpg), 6-7 F Clayton Brown (12.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg), 6-2 G Derrick Jackson (7.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg), 6-6 F Joe Campbell (6.1 ppg, 3.2 rpg); New Hampshire – 6-6 G Austin Ganly (14.7 ppg, 5.4 rpg), 6-4 F Chris Brown (14.2 ppg, 9.9 rpg), 6-0 G Marcus Bullock (10.4 ppg, 2.9 rpg), 6-6 F Allen Gould (8.7 ppg, 4.1 rpg), 6-7 F Ben Sturgill (4.7 ppg, 3.5 rpg)

Outlook: The Black Bears may have their hands full against a team they’ve defeated six straight times, and 11 times in the last 12 meetings. UNH has won six of seven games after a brutal early schedule that included Notre Dame, Boston College, Connecticut and Florida. Ganly, a Maine native, is 43 points shy of 1,000 for his career. The Wildcats continue to shuffle players in and out of the lineup: 10 players average more than 10 minutes per game. The two teams are among four league teams with three or four conference losses. Despite his height, the 6-4 Brown is a tenacious rebounder who must be accounted for. Rowe could dominate against the under-sized Wildcats. He is effective when he finishes with authority, less effective when he’s tentative.
