Clarke propels UMM to victory

MACHIAS – Wayne Clarke racked up 10 points and 10 rebounds in the second half Saturday to lift the University of Maine-Machias to a 78-63 Maine Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory over UM-Fort Kent.

Clarke finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds while Albert Whittaker logged 15 points and eight assists. Omari Gomes and Courtenay Campbell contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Barry Bryan paced the Bengals with 17 points. Stafford Bente added 12 points.

For Lyndon State, Tom Witts tallied 24 points and Greg Rose scored 18. Peter Camp added 11 and Chris Brown chipped in with 10.

At Gorham Saturday, Chris Urquhart nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Keene State (N.H.) over Southern Maine. The Owls won their 13th straight and improved to 16-1.

The Huskies had grabbed an 86-85 lead when Jeff White scored on a spinning layup with six seconds to go. USM led by 15 early in the second half.

Chris Timson led Keene State with 23 , David Stantial had 16, and Urquhart contributed 10.

White finished with 28 points, including five 3-pointers, for the Huskies. Jason St. Pierre added 20 and freshman Mike Francoeur tallied 11.

At Orono Saturday, Tristan Desmet and Cailee Heggestad each knocked in two goals as the Black Bears rolled to the win.

Jamie Hill contributed a goal and three assists for 11-12-2 Maine. Esther Granville had a goal and an assist. Meagan Aarts and Cindy Biron scored one goal apiece. Tracy Caridade had two assists and Dawn Froats made 15 saves on 18 shots.

Hilary Bulger, Jayne Riley and Elizabeth Jankowski each scored a goal for 3-16-2 Quinnipiac. Mel Courtemanche stopped 33 of 39 shots and Catherine Lapare gave up two goals during her 2:19 in goal.
