As a representative on the A.C.F. Committee, I sat through the hearings on animal control. The incident in Wayne of frozen cats, abandoned dogs, etc. was an example used of cruelty to animals, but when you consider licensing cats to offset the cost of hiring people to take care of this, I find it hard to believe that’s the answer.
Cats are good pets for many elderly people. They’re easy to take care of. They’re a lot of company for these people, plus, they are loved. As my cousin, an elderly lady who lived alone once said, “It’s something else in the house that’s breathing besides me.” People on low, fixed incomes would find it hard to take extra money to license their cats, which they aren’t abusing anyhow. Don’t penalize good people for the harm bad people do.
