Hamlin, Allen help Penquis defeat Lynx

MILO – Lindsay Hamlin led the charge with 19 points to lead Penquis to a 68-59 schoolgirl basketball win over Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

April Allen tossed in 17 for Penquis and Megan Russell added 16.

Jen Harvey sparked the Lynx with 13 points. Ali Keegan notched 12, and Courtney Gulesian tallied 11.

Cassi Gray powered Islesboro with a game-high 26 points and 22 rebounds. Mary Czenkusch connected for 21.

At Bucksport, Jason Harvey poured in 41 points – offsetting a 40-point performance by Nokomis star Ryan McLellan – as the Class B Golden Bucks earned a season sweep of the Class A powers from Newport.

Corey Guilford contributed 17 points for the Bucks while Chris Dow added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Mike Ogden grabbed eight rebounds and Harvey handed out five assists.

Luke Hayden tallied 14 points for the Warriors. McLellan scored 16 of his 40 in the fourth quarter.

At Thomaston, Travis Magnusson buried seven three-pointers, including one with 2:22 left in the game to give him his 2,000th career point, a feat accomplished by only four other high school boys in Maine. He poured in 38 total points, and the Buccaneers nipped Madison.

Sam Schmonsees added 12 points for the winners.

Adam Rich paced the Bulldogs with 20 points. John Cannon notched 13 points. Bobby Fortin and Justin Francoze had 11 each.

Adam Smith scored 14 and Jake King had 10 points and eight rebounds for Ellsworth, which made two free throws with 17 seconds to play to cut the lead to two, then missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer after forcing a turnover.

Jon Bolduc popped in 11 points, dished out 10 assists, and had five steals for the Eagles.

Josh Doughty led the Vikings with 28 points. Josh Miller tossed in 12, and Eric Bechman added 10.

At Sukee Arena in Winslow, Josh Caldwell scored a goal and assisted on two others and Will Prescott added a goal and an assist as the Witches improved to 8-5.

Matt Grimes and A.J. Hayes scored a goal apiece for Brewer while Josh Kochis had an assist. Spencer Dunbar made 16 saves.

Roland Bullock converted a Nick Porto assist for the 5-8 Bulldogs of Fairfield. Jacob Mitchell made 25 stops.

Orono 4, Winslow 2

At Winslow, senior right winger Mike Merritt’s goal with 6:49 remaining broke a 2-2 tie and he added an empty-netter 5:31 later as Orono beat Winslow for the second time this season.

Merritt took a pass from Pat Skall, went in alone on goalie Tim Cloutier and converted. The third member of the line, Will Toner, also assisted. Skall and Toner also assisted on Merritt’s empty-netter.

Brano Srnka scored a pair of second-period goals 50 seconds apart for 14-1 Orono. They were sandwiched by goals from Winslow’s Gabe Joseph and Jason Carter. The four goals came in a span of 2:25.

Nick Dwyer and Mark Caggiano had assists for Orono and Casey Hale finished with 30 saves.

Chris Langlais had an assist for 11-5 Winslow and Cloutier made 24 stops.
