Vance single lifts South to win> Old Town’s Drinkwater, Bucksport’s Caswell star in PVC game

BREWER – Kari Vance of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln singled in Erynn Bailey of Penquis in Milo to give the South a 2-1 victory over the North Friday night in the first Penobscot Valley Conference All-Star softball game.

Bucksport’s Annette Caswell singled twice for the South and was named the South’s MVP. Denise Erland and Jeanna Leclerc of George Stevens in Blue Hill each singled.

Tara Drinkwater struck out six in three innings of work and added a single to win MVP honors for the North. Drinkwater also scored the North’s only run on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Trask of Hampden Academy. Jamie Higgins of Old Town and Brewer’s Tami Corey also singled.

The game went 10 innings so that 10 pitchers got two innings each.

Seniors play tonight

On Saturday, senior standouts from all over the state will play in the first Maine High School Softball Coaches Association all-star games at Cony Park in Augusta. The game for Classes C and D will begin at 6 p.m. and the A/B game starts at 8 p.m.

In between senior softball all-star games, the coaches association will present a Player of the Year award to the top senior high schooler and Coach of the Year awards for all four classes.

M. Network 12, Worcester Peat 8

At Harrison, Joe Drapeau hit a two-run home run during a five-run fifth inning as Mortgage Network of Portland topped Worcester Peat.

Jim Dillon added two singles for the winners and Chip Derback added a double, a single and an RBI.

Chris Knickerbocker paced Worcester Peat with a double and two singles. Ryan Maheux singled twice and drove in two runs. Starting pitcher Sazi Guthrie struck out seven in the loss.
