BANGOR — The third British citizen in recent weeks to cause an in-flight ruckus that resulted in a jetliner being diverted to Bangor was arraigned Wednesday at U.S. District Court in Bangor.
Christopher James Bayes, 41, of Manchester, England, pleaded not guilty to one federal count of interference with a flight crew and one count of simple assault, stemming from an incident aboard a Delta Air Lines jet traveling from Atlanta to Manchester, England.
Bayes appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Eugene Beaulieu.
Indicted last week by a federal grand jury, Bayes faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both if convicted.
Represented by defense attorney Daniel Lilley of Portland, Bayes remains free on $20,000 cash bail. He has been ordered to stay in Maine until the case is resolved, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The indictment states Bayes committed simple assault on two members of a Delta flight crew in the early morning hours of June 6. An FBI agent has stated Bayes became unruly on the flight after he was refused an alcoholic beverage.
As a result of the struggle, two flight attendants were treated at a Bangor hospital. Bayes reportedly had to be restrained on the floor of the jet until it touched down in Bangor.
His case was placed on an Aug. 2 trial list.
