12 more FH quarterfinals set for today

Weather permitting, 12 more field hockey quarterfinals will take place Wednesday in eastern and western Maine.

Eleven of 12 quarterfinals games scheduled for Tuesday were postponed to Thursday.

One defending state champion, Class C Winthrop, and two defending regional champions, Class B Cape Elizabeth and Class C Telstar of Bethel, return to defend their respective titles.

Wednesday’s contests pit the No. 2 teams against the No. 7 teams, and the No. 3 teams against the No. 6 teams.

Winthrop, finishing the regular season at 10-3-1, is ranked third in Eastern C and hosts No. 6 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, 8-5-1, at 3 p.m. The other Class C quarterfinal has No. 2 Dexter, 9-3-2, hosting No. 7 Central of East Corinth, 7-7-0, at 3 p.m.

The Class B contests have No. 2 Messalonskee of Oakland, 12-2-0, hosting No. 7 Old Town, 6-7-1, at 3 p.m. Old Town was the Eastern Maine Class B runnerup last year. No. 3 Rockland, 8-5-1, hosts No. 6 Lincoln Acacdemy of Newcastle, 6-6-2, at 3 p.m.

Second-ranked Nokomis of Newport tops the A action. The Warriors earned that spot with a 12-1-1 record and host Brewer, 5-9-0, at 3:30 p.m. Skowhegan, 11-3-0, is No. 3 and hosts No. 6 Gardiner, 9-4-1, at 3 p.m.

In Western Maine Class A action, No. 2 Bonny Eagle of West Buxton, 9-3-2, hosts No. 7 Sanford, 7-5-2; and two 9-4-1 teams face each other as No. 3 Biddeford hosts No. 6 Thornton Acacdemy of Saco.

Western B activity will have No. 2 York, 12-2-0, hosting No. 7 Marshwood of Eliot, 6-6-2; and No. 3 Kennebunk, 9-4-1, hosting No. 6 Cape Elizabeth, 7-6-1.

The Class C contests have No. 2 Telstar, 11-1-2, hosting No. 7 Old Orchard Beach, 5-8-1; and No. 3 North Yarmouth Accdemy, 9-4-1, hosting No. 6 Falmouth, 6-6-2.
