WASHINGTON — Sen. Susan Collins was successful Thursday in gaining unanimous passage in the Senate of a resolution calling for a commemorative postage stamp honoring the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
“As a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary post in Caribou, Maine, and as the daughter of a World War II veteran who was wounded twice in combat, I am honored to lead the charge for this worthwhile legislation,” Collins said in a prepared statement.
Earlier this year, Collins introduced a bill calling on the Postal Service to issue a commemorative stamp honoring the VFW. Noting the proximity to July 4, and the history and freedoms that day marks, Collins offered last week her resolution as an amendment to the Treasury-Postal Appropriations bill.
“I can think of no more appropriate time to honor the brave men and women who, while far from home, sacrificed so much that the dreams of our founding fathers might become, and remain, a reality,” said Collins.
