Morin, Howlers top Owls

HOWLAND -Stu Morin scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half and grabbed 13 rebounds Friday night as 12th-seeded Penobscot Valley eked out a 52-49 Eastern Maine Class C first-round preliminary boys basketball victory over No. 13 Madawaska.

Morin stepped up his offense after the Madawaska defense slowed Scott Bates, who scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half. Noah McPike finished with 10 points, including two free throws in the closing seconds to help secure the win, for the Howlers.

Guy Michaud tossed in a game-high 23 points for Madawaska, which had a chance to go ahead in the last 30 seconds but missed the shot. Keith Cyr and B.J. Dufour added eight points each.

At the Bangor Auditorium, Christina Rich had 12 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the John Bapst Crusaders to the win.

Stephanie Sockbeson scored 10 points while Julie Crotty dished out seven assists for Bapst.

Ashley Monahan led the visiting Vikings with 12 points.

At Presque Isle, Darren Carlisle knocked in three goals and added an assist as the Wildcats rolled.

Andy Beaulieu scored a goal and had tallied two assists for 12-6 Presque Isle. Dan Erickson and Joe Gahagan each chipped in with a goal and an assist. Chad Sirois, Jon Flenner and Mike Carvell added a goal apiece. Joe Grenier stopped 22 of the 26 shots he faced.

Bobby Clark led the 11-5 Bulldogs of Farmingdale with a goal and assist. Nate Conroy, Justin Feeney and Tim Dieterich each added a goal. Adam St. Onge and Doug Blanchette combined for 34 saves on 43 shots.
