Abbie Bowen of Penquis Valley High School in Milo is one of six student-athletes to be awarded a Maine Baseball Hall of Fame Scholarship at a banquet on Sunday, July 25th.

Bowen, along with Jodie Eldridge of Westbrook and Jessica Hunter of Brunswick, has been selected to receive one of three Marie W. Noel softball scholarships. Tony DiSotto of Jay High School, Roger Levesque of Falmouth and Deering High School’s Stuart Tisdale were chosen for the Edward J. “Packy” McFarland scholarships.

Each award is worth $500.

The awards and induction ceremony and banquet will be held at the Holiday Inn By the Bay on Spring Street in Portland. Tickets for the event cost $18 and can be purchased by contacting Don Douglas at 846-3460.

In addition to the scholarships, Ward Sherwood of Portland will be presented with the Hall of Fame’s President’s Award. Sherwood has umpired in the greater-Portland area for four decades at all levels of amateur baseball.

Bowen was selected after a stellar career at Penquis. A four-time Penobscot Valley Conference All-Star selection, Bowen was the only pitcher at Penquis during her four years attending the school. She holds Patriots’ records in wins, strikeouts, ERA, no-hitters and one-hitters. She will attend Quinnipiac College in the fall.

Eldridge compiled an 11-5 record for the Blue Blazes this spring, with an ERA of 1.01 and 105 strikeouts in 109 innings pitched. She is headed to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts this fall.

Brunswick’s Hunter hit .385 this spring for the Dragons with 11 RBIs. She was a second-team Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference all-star selection. Hunter will enroll at McGill University in Montreal.

DiSotto paced the Tigers with a .510 average, four home runs and 20 RBIs this spring. A captain in three sports, he will attend Colby College in the fall.

Stanford University-bound Levesque was part of two state champions in baseball. In three years as a starter, he hit .350 and had a .993 fielding percentage.

Tisdale, this year’s Mr. Baseball for the state, hit .479 with 24 RBIs for Deering and graduated in the top 25 in his class.
