Maine couple claim share of $9.7 million

AUGUSTA — More than a week after their winning ticket was drawn, a Maine couple sharing a third of the record $9.7 million Tri-State Megabucks jackpot came forward Monday and calmly claimed their prize.

Diane Kruchkow and Ted Gay said they plan to renovate the old farm house where they live in New Sharon while they get used to owning a fortune.

“Basically, we’re broke every month,” said a beaming Kruchkow, 42, who teaches English part-time at the University of Maine at Farmington.

“I’m going to buy a new pickup truck,” said Gay, 55, who was recently certified to teach elementary school.

The two will share a total of $3.2 million — $161,000 a year for 20 years before taxes — for winning a third of the largest jackpot ever awarded in the Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont game.

They said they had bought three “easy pick” numbers selected by computer.

Kruchkow said the two were “extremely calm” when they saw in the Sunday newspaper March 18 that their ticket had the winning numbers. “We were as calm as anything.”

But Kruchkow admitted that she had trouble keeping her mind off her lottery win at times. When she taught class one night last week, “I had to apologize to my class for being a little bit spacy,” she said.

The couple said they held off claiming their prize until they could set up a trust fund for their winnings and attend to other legal matters.

A couple from Cornish, N.H., claimed the first share of the jackpot from the March 17 drawing, and a Derry, N.H., man who owns a company that builds signs won the second portion.
