Tough tourney day for Orono, Brewer> Falcons eliminated, Twins play today

AUBURN – Sunday was anything but a fun day for either of the Zone 1 representatives in the American Legion state baseball tournament.

Zone 3 champion Oxford Hills eliminated Zone 1 champ Brewer 15-13 in a three-hour slugfest on a hot and humid Austin Field and Zone 4 champ Nova Seafood of Portland followed that with a 21-3, mercy rule-shortened drubbing of Zone 1 runnerup Orono at the sun-baked Auburn Suburban Complex.

Orono, now 17-7, will play the 18-4 Oxford Hills Vikings in a 10 a.m. elimination game Monday. Brewer bows out with a 14-9 record.

Also on Sunday, New Auburn eliminated Augusta 6-5 and Andrews Post defeated Waterville 18-7 in a winners’ brackett matchup.

Nova Seafood pounded out 21 hits in seven innings and took advantage of four Orono errors to score four unearned runs, but with five doubles and a grand slam, they were inconsequential unearned runs.

“We really didn’t execute well offensively or defensively, and once it starts rolling one way or another for either team, it tends to snowball,” said Orono coach Dave Paul about the blowout. “The good thing is we have a chance again tomorrow. We have to play for a chance to play on Tuesday.”

Nova shortstop-pitcher Scott Shirrell led the batting blitzkrieg with two doubles, a grand slam which highlighted a seven-run sixth inning, and seven RBIs.

It looked like it might be a repeat of the back-and-forth Brewer-Oxford Hills game early as Nova scored three runs in the first on two hits, and Orono answered with three in the bottom of the inning, two of which came on Aaron Civiello’s home run to right center.

But Nova came right back with five in the second on a seven-hit explosion to take a comfortable lead the Twins would never approach again.

“We don’t have a lot of power, but we do have the speed,” said Nova coach and University of Maine alumnus Mike D’Andrea. “The one thing I want to say is this score doesn’t reflect Orono’s ballclub. We saved our ace pitcher [Jarrett Shaffer] for this game and they had some tough breaks. We just got on a roll.”

And they just kept on rolling through three Orono pitchers.

Earlier Sunday, Brewer twice rallied – from 9-7 and 12-11 deficits – and had a chance to win with runners at first and second and one out in the ninth, but couldn’t find enough reserve for one more comeback.

Despite outhitting the Vikings 17-15, the Falcons were playing catch-up all day, thanks to a tourney-high seven errors in the game.

“That’s the bottom line. Mistakes hurt us and we just kept playing from behind all day long,” said Brewer coach Dave Gonyar. “You can’t make that many errors and win too many games.”

The two teams combined for six home runs at the symmetrical ballpark, which is 330 feet to the fences.

“We had a week off because our regular season champ doesn’t play in the zone tournament, and I think that hurt us,” said Oxford coach Steve Jones. “But I think our kids are starting to hit and play the way they’re capable of today.”

New Auburn 6, Augusta 5

In Sunday’s first game, New Auburn rallied for three runs in the seventh inning behind Craig Chapman’s run-scoring double, Greg Dumais’ RBI single and a dropped fly ball that allowed Dumais to score from first with what proved to be the winning run.

Dumais and Chapman each had two hits for the winners and Mike Reid had a solo homer.

Kevin Brunelle went 3-for-3, all singles, and scored twice for Augusta. Josh Cushman doubled twice and knocked in three runs. Jared Cushman added two base hits.

Chris McCabe paced Waterville with a double, two singles and two RBIs. Chris Hart added two singles and drove in one run.
