BANGOR — A Millinocket man who claimed to be a serious gun collector was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison after earlier pleading guilty to three weapons violations. The sentencing took place at U.S. District Court.
Mark Deschene, 25, earlier pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm while subject to a protection order, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
U.S. District Judge Morton Brody ordered Deschene to serve 18 months on each count handed up in a spring indictment, but the sentences will be served concurrently. Brody also ordered Deschene to serve three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
Deschene received a stolen TEC DC9 9 mm pistol on or about Dec. 18, 1998, according to court documents. He also was found by police to possess an M11-A1 .380-caliber pistol and an SKS 7.62×39 mm rifle. The weapons were involved in a burglary two days before Deschene purchased them from three individuals the police were investigating, according to his attorney.
At the time he acquired the weapons, Deschene was subject to a restraining order issued in September 1998 by his then-girlfriend. The restraining order subsequently was rescinded and Deschene married the woman, according to court information.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gail Malone said the government recommended Deschene be sentenced to the low end of the guideline range for the felonies. “The low end of the spectrum is appropriate,” said Brody who also gave Deschene credit for time served. Deschene reportedly surrendered himself last May.
