The island ferries charge proportionally more for bicycles than for cars. The fare for a bicycle is more than a third the fare for a car, so it is cheaper for a family of three to take a car than their bicycles. Is it Department of Transportation policy to encourage automobiles over bicycles?
Weight-wise a car is the equivalent of 100 bicycles. In terms of deck space a dozen bicycles easily fit in the space of one car. Perhaps a program to encourage bicycling would relieve the need for new ferries.
