WORCESTER, Mass. – Kristi Knights converted a Noriko Kariya pass with 8:55 remaining to give the University of Maine a 3-2 field hockey victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday.

For the 7-8 Bears, it was their first lead of the game.

Jes Gulino scored a pair of first-half goals for Holy Cross, but Jen Johnstone tied it 1-1 and Katie Hedges knotted it up again with 12:25 left in the half.

Danielle Burke made nine saves on 16 shots for Maine.

Colleen Schmitt and Kim Ferguson each had two assists for 3-9 Holy Cross, and Maquell Salley stopped 17 of 24 shots.

Southern Maine 2, St. Joseph’s 0

At Gorham, senior Alison Drury became just the fourth player in Southern Maine’s 33-year field hockey history to reach the 30-goal plateau for her career by scoring her 10th of the season.

Kim Cochrane had the other goal for 10-4 USM and Cory Merrill assisted on Drury’s 30th.

Women’s soccer

Providence 1, Maine 0

At Providence, Shayna Ross made six saves in posting her third shutout of the season and junior defender Kim Carr scored her first career goal as the Friars edged the Bears to improve to 4-8.

Carr scored from the top of the penalty area with 26:59 left off a Melissa Crowley pass.

Naomi Welsh made seven saves on 19 shots for the 1-11 Bears.

St. Joseph’s 2, UM-Farmington 0

At Farmington, Kristine O’Shea and Kim Little scored 10 minutes apart in the second half to give the Monks the win that moved them into lone possession of first place in the Maine Athletic Conference.

Kelly Premo assisted on Little’s goal and Kendra Brown made three saves on four shots for 7-2-1 St. Joseph’s of Standish, which is 5-0 in MAC play.

Goalkeepers Pam Goyette and Alyson Pontbriand combined to make eight saves on 11 shots for the 8-3 Beavers, 4-1 in the MAC.
