Cougars win 2nd straight giant slalom Mt. Blue places six skiers in top 20 at Sunday River

The Mt. Blue girls ski team won its second straight state Class A giant slalom team championship Monday at the Sunday River Ski Resort.

The Cougars of Farmington placed five skiers among the top 15 and six in the top 20 and finished with a team score of 20 points. Leavitt of Turner Center was a distant second with 44 points.

Mt. Blue’s Allison Demshar won the event with a two-run time of 1 minute, 45.61 seconds.

Chris Carlton’s second-place finish led Oxford Hills of South Paris to the boys title. The Vikings had four skiers among the top 20 and a team total of 38 points. Defending champion Mt. Blue was second with 49 points.

In the Class B competition at Lonesome Pine Trails in Fort Kent, Fryeburg Academy won the state girls giant slalom championship and Mountain Valley of Rumford was the boys winner.

Jen Pike of Lake Region was the girls individual champion with a two-run time of 1:29.56.

Sara Belden and Sarah Gahagan of Presque Isle placed seventh and ninth, respectively. Hampden Academy’s Emily O’Connell placed eighth, Heidi Andrews of Maine Central Institute was 14th and Jackie Masse of Fort Kent finished 20th.

Maranacook of Readfield’s Brian Cook won the boys individual title by completing his two runs in 1:24.13.

Jacques Ouellette of Fort Kent placed 10th, while Presque Isle’s Zack Smith was 16th and Hampden’s Matt Moretti placed 17th.
