ORONO – No Fear. Take risks. Just do it.
The high-adventure sayings of today encourage athletes to walk the fine line between injury and elation. Being able to live dangerously was the difference in the high school girls Class B quarterfinal soccer game at the University of Maine on Monday.
That’s all Old Town’s Meghan King was thinking when Maureen Pease sent her a cross from the right corner 4 minutes, 49 seconds into the game. Running in from the 18-yard line, King turned her back on the goal and did the thing Indians coach Randy Bernard abhors: King threw her leg up in bicycle-kick style, the only way she saw possible to naiack of the net.
As it was, King’s daring shot gave the No. 5 Indians a 1-0 upset over No. 4 Orono and the right to play top-ranked Winslow at Winslow in a Wednesday semifinal. Winslow blanked No. 8 Fort Kent 3-0.
“I flipped my leg up and it went over my head. I do that quite often, on my free time,” King said. “Coach doesn’t want us to do it. I do it anyway. You’re supposed to go all the way around in a flip. So it’s dangerous.”
King can’t do the entire flip. That doesn’t make her favorite stunt any less painful.
“Oh, I’ve landed on my back plenty of times,” she laughed. “Other teams don’t expect [the bicycle kick].”
Orono clearly didn’t expect the early goal, as King was left open. The Riot defenders didn’t make the mistake again, closing off lanes and feeding their offense in the second half. The Riots outshot the Indians 17-10 in the game, but in such an even matchup, the lone goal decided it.
“Pretty much, they got the early goal,” Orono coach Cid Dyjak said. “I’m very proud of how we played. They played well defensively when they had to. We have nothing to be ashamed of.”
Old Town goalkeeper Justine Ferland made 13 saves on 17 shots, including a few tough ones from point-blank range, and two that came on Ragnhild Skjetne breakaways. Ferland’s in-your-face defense coincided with her team’s physical play.
“That’s our team,” King said, looking down, laughing. “We play like a bunch of softball players, diving onto the ground.”
Orono’s Sarah Gray stopped six shots as the Riots finished their season 11-3-1.
