Plays of the day

Andy Frost, Calais junior guard, penetrated the low post to draw the fifth and final foul on Hodgdon star forward-center Tyler Putnam with 3:11 to play in a quarterfinal clash. Without Putnam, the Hawks were unable to contain Calais’ tough inside game and the Devils went on to hand Hodgdon its first loss of the season.

Noteworthy statistics

Jared Gray, WA guard, shot 5-for-8 from 3-point range as the Raiders hit nine of 18 3-point attempts as a team.

The Calais girls shot 28-for-49 (57.1 percent) from the floor and forced 42 turnovers while defeating Hodgdon 82-26.

Lana Martin, Calais guard, scored 18 points and made 10 steals, handed out six assists and grabbed five rebounds in just more than two quarters of action.

Joe Footer, Calais center, shot 9-for-9 from the line in the game and 8-for-8 in the final 41/2 minutes of his Class C quarterfinal game to help his Blue Devils go from a 53-50 deficit to a 67-56 victory.

The Central girls won a battle of teams without much recent tourney history: The Red Devils hadn’t been to the Bangor Auditorium since 1994, while Madawaska had also not qualified for the tourney in eight years. The Owls have never won a tourney game (boys or girls) in Bangor, athletic director Ed Marshall said.

Quotes

“I’m sorry,” Madawaska senior Kristine Cyr said, sheepishly, to coach Merlida Plourde after Cyr had become ill moments after scoring her 1,000th career point.
