St. Joseph’s, UMM, UMFK advance to semifinals

The St. Joseph’s College Monks and University of Maine-Fort Kent Bengals will battle in a Maine Athletic Conference semifinal after posting quarterfinal victories Tuesday night.

UMFK knocked off Aroostook County rival UMaine-Presque Isle 101-93 and St. Joseph’s eliminated Thomas College of Waterville 98-52.

UMFK and St. Joe’s will meet Sunday at the Augusta Civic Center. The University of Maine-Machias Clippers also advanced to the semifinal round with a 68-65 win over the UMaine-Farmington Beavers.

UMM will battle top-seeded Husson of Bangor on Sunday, also in Augusta.

At Fort Kent, Barry Bryant led UMFK with 18 points and three assists. Matt Daudier scored 15 while Matt Alarcon had 14 and Kenyon Glover added 13. Stafford Bente chipped in with 12 points while Mo Young helped out with 11 for the Bengals.

Dan Emerson and Craig Smith each poured in 21 points for UMPI while Vjeko Jadric netted 20 and Ryan Lamoreau added 13.

At Standish, C.J. Vose and Jon Pratt powered an 18-3 run to open the game as the Monks rolled to their 33rd straight victory over the Terriers.

Vose and 22 points to lead the winners and Bilal Dawan-Abdullah and Silas Ayres each added 13.

Jimmy Cardaci paced Thomas with 15 points and Shelby Turcotte put in 13.

Brian Cagle scored 19 points to lead the third seeded Corsairs past the the sixth seeded Huskies in the first round of the Little East Conference men’s basketball championship tournament at North Darmouth, Mass.

Brian Austin had 13 points, Chris Lapriore added 11 and Manny Monteiro tossed in 10 for UMass.-Dartmouth.

Jeff White of Etna and Mike Francoeur had 16 points apiece to lead Southern Maine. Jason St. Pierre of Bangor scored 14 points.
