BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

A bill to create a special license plate for Korean War veterans is scheduled to be heard in the next session of the Legislature. While there is no emergency per se, there is a need to enact the bill quickly, inasmuch as the year 200 begins the worldwide 50th anniversary commemoration of the Korean War. This will be a three-year program that will be directed by a special office which has been established at the Pentagon. A special office has also been set up in Korea by Headquarters, Unites States Forces, Korea.

Commemoration activities, including massive parades in Washington, D.C., and Seoul, South Korea, will be held in 22 countries to honor the men and women from those nations who served, fought, bled, died in Korea in the 1950s to repel Communist aggression and preserve the freedom of the South Korean people.

Here in Maine, the Korean War Veterans Association will host a 50th anniversary convention at Bangor on Aug. 18, 19 and 20. The event is expected to draw some 2,000 Korean War veterans from KWVA chapters in New England, as well as from several counterpart Korean War veterans organizations in Canada. A contingent from the Korean armed forces is also expected to attend. Martin J. O’Brien Augusta
