AUGUSTA – Western Maine champions were crowned at regional championship games Friday night and Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center, with the Valley of Bingham boys gaining their fifth straight Class D regional title Saturday.

The Cavaliers topped Elan of Portland for the WM championship. The Gorham boys won the Class B title Friday and the Jay boys earned an overtime win Saturday in Class C.

All three 2001 Western Maine champion girls teams successfully defended their titles. Gray-New Gloucester won Class B Friday, Dirigo of Dixfield took Class C Saturday, and Rangeley was the Class D winner Saturday.

Brian Andre pumped in 20 points to lead four-time defending state champ Valley in the Class D title game. Twin brothers Luke and Jason Hartwell scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, and Nate Gilbert added 11.

Marvin Reels led Elan with 14.

Tyrell Waldon poured in 25 points to lead the Tigers past the Buccaneers. Derek Armandi scored four of his 16 in overtime.

Travis Magnussen poured in 38 points, including eight in the overtime, for Georges Valley of Thomaston. Sam Schmonsees added 11.

Gorham’s Andy Jenkins went 14-for-16 from the free-throw line en route to 22 points in the Rams’ win, their third title in a row.

Kendrick Ballantyne added 20 points for Gorham.

Aaron Spaulding had a game-high 26 points for the Capers.
