I’ve been a trucker for 27 years and have many safe miles of coast-to-coast trucking experience. But what bothers me most is our laws concerning our legal overweight Maine state-certified vehicles (vehicles licensed to haul over the 80,000 gross limit).
In other states that neighbor us, if you are hauling overweight the states encourage you to use the interstate systems, but not Maine. Instead you’re not allowed to use the interstates, except the Maine Turnpike to move your freight. Maine says you must use roads like 201, 202, Route 1 and secondary roads. When the road needs to be repaired, who is paying to fix your town roads? And when the school bus stops to let kids off from school, or during winter months of snow and tourist season in the summer, keeping those rigs off the interstate is not such a smart idea.
