OLD TOWN – The Old Town Republican Committee has had a change of leadership.

Walter Huppman, who served as chairman of the Old Town GOP for about two years, stepped down this weekend after the caucus. Huffman, who is also on the City Council, said he had a number of reasons for stepping down from the post, but that a legal case involving a police officer played a part in his decision.

VEAZIE – The Town Council on Monday voted to support the controversial Basin Mills hydroelectric project.

The town, which was granted intervenor status, also is working to develop a recreation plan, which the Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. will construct if the project is approved.

25 years ago – Feb. 28, 1977

BANGOR – Clutch foul shots in the final 1:28 by Tom Philbrick and Terry Weeks enabled the Husson College Braves to stave off a valiant University of Maine at Portland-Gorham comeback and collect an 86-83 decision in an NAIA District Five playoff game played before a disappointingly small crowd at Husson’s Newman Gym Sunday evening.

Husson will now face Keene State College (N.H.) in Keene for the District Five championship on Wednesday evening.

WATERVILLE – Philip Emery’s Bangor High School swimmers sent shock waves throughout Maine swim circles Saturday as they upset Hebron Academy 210 to 196 to win the state championship held at Colby College.

“I am shocked. I thought we would have to scramble for second place,” explained Emery after his team won its sixth state title in seven years.

50 years ago – Feb. 28, 1952

BANGOR – G. Pierce Webber was elected president of the board of directors of the Bangor-Brewer Community Chest at the annual meeting of that body, held Wednesday at 4 p.m. Other officers elected were: Willis J. Weeks, vice president; Mrs. Gordon D. Briggs, secretary; and Harold L. Nelson, treasurer.

ORONO – About 100 young people attended the Penobscot Valley subdistrict Methodist Youth fellowship meeting in the Orono Methodist Church tonight.

A song session led by the Rev. George Budd of Lincoln opened the meeting, when the group planned to attend the annual conference at the First Methodist Church in Bangor, May 17. The group also decided to continue subdistrict meetings every other month, and to hold fall, midwinter and spring rallies.

100 years ago – Feb. 28, 1902

BANGOR – Ice-cutting operations in Bangor for the present winter are practically concluded, and while the sum total of the cut will fill a great many thousands of tons below what it has been in winters heretofore, there has been a considerable harvest. Practically all of the ice has been cut on the Kenduskeag Stream, although a number of thousand tons have been cut and housed on the shore of the river.

BANGOR – Of Miss Gertrude Coghlan and her company in “Her Ladyship,” the play to be given at Bangor Opera House tonight, the Burlington Vt., Free Press said:

“Miss Gertrude Coghlan, who was the principal role the performance was eminently satisfactory. The play itself is a strong one, being interesting from start to finish and somewhat unique in its construction. The production was finely mounted and costumed and was much enjoyed by the large audience present.”
