PISCATAQUIS COUNTY — The bleak economic outlook appeared to be on the minds of early voters in Piscataquis County as they voted down all of the bond issues Tuesday.

Early results from three of the 19 communities with polling places in Piscataquis County — Bowerbank, Kingsbury Plantation and Lakeview Plantation — showed that residents defeated all of the bond issues, as well as the constitutional amendment regarding mortgage loans.

Sunday sales was favored by the voters in the three communities 64-35.

In Lakeview Plantation, Clerk Barbara Reed said 26 out of the 32 registered voters participated in this election for an excellent voter turnout. She was the first to report her community’s results, followed by Lois Worcester, clerk of Kingsbury Plantation.

The Republican candidates garnered the most votes in the three communities. Gov. John McKernan maintained a 2-to-1 lead over Joseph Brennan 61-31. Sen. William Cohen received 77 votes to Neil Rolde’s 22 votes.

U.S. Rep. Olympia Snowe was ahead in the race for the 2nd District seat. She received 70 votes to Patrick McGowan’s 31 votes.

Newcomer Stephen Hall-R of Guilford narrowly edged out longtime Sen. Charles Pray of Millinocket in early results. Hall received 51 votes to Pray’s 49 votes. John Goggin of Guilford, the Republican contender for sheriff, maintained a large lead over his competitor, Robert McGrath of Beaver Cove, 78-17.
