BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

In the Feb. 11 issue of the Bangor Daily News, there were two articles on two men sentenced to prison for sexually abusing children. One got nine months for assaulting a 13-year-old retarded girl. He could have received 40 years, but got nine months under a plea bargain for guilty because he was drunk. No one addressed the court on behalf of the child who was hospitalized as the result of this pervert’s actions.

The other man got 60 days for sexual offenses involving three 7-year-old girls. He could have received five years, but he pleaded guilty, so he could receive a lesser sentence. What kind of law is this? Our children have no protection against these sexual perverts, until the law protects the victims, not the guilty parties. The detective who investigated said Harold Dauphin had a long history of sexually abusing girls. Sure he has, he knows how to work the system; serve a few days, and then be set free to find some more children to molest.

Shame on the judge, shame on the attorneys, shame on the lady detective — how would you react if this was your daughter? Sexual abuse is rampant and the law needs to be changed to protect innocent boys and girls — this was a fine example. Is anyone listening? Geraldine Archer Bucksport
