Brewer Levinsky’s to reopen Monday

After being closed since March 4 for renovations, Levinsky’s of Brewer will reopen next week at its location formerly occupied by the Emple Knitting Mill Outlet.

According to Bruce Levinsky, a vice president for the clothing and footwear retailer, the renovated space features new walls, floors, ceilings, fixtures and lights.

In addition to the new look, the Brewer store also will feature Levinsky’s full line of name-brand merchandise. When the Portland-based retailer opened in Brewer last November, its operation included only a bargain basement, and not the full line of merchandise offered at Levinsky’s other stores.

“We’re not a bargain basement any more,” Levinsky said Tuesday. “Now the Brewer store is a prototype Levinsky’s.”

Also, emphasizing his company’s long-term commitment to the Bangor area, Levinsky said that a 20-year lease had been signed for the Brewer facility, located on Wilson Street.

When the Portland retailer located in Brewer, it was only for a trial period to see how the location fared during the Christmas-shopping season. The trial period was successful, Levinsky said.

Levinsky’s was started in 1919 and built a solid reputation among shoppers in the Portland area. The company has been in an expansion mode for several years. The company’s second store was opened in North Windham in 1987. A location in Freeport soon followed. The Brewer operation is the retailer’s fourth outlet.

A grand opening for the renovated Brewer store will be held Monday, when the store will be open for business. Levinsky said the store would be open from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m., six days a week.
