Recently, our 20-year-old son, who happens to be a full-time student at Husson College and also works an average of 25 hours a week, received a summons to appear for jury duty at Superior Court in Bangor. He wrote a letter to the court explaining his situation but was denied an excuse.
While we feel this is a very important duty, we also feel some things should be taken into consideration when summoning people to serve. He will miss classes that are very important due to upcoming finals. There must be a lot of other people to pick from such as retired people or others who aren’t working or choose not to work. He would be more than willing to serve in the summer when there are no classes. We think it is unfair to require someone who attends full-time college to miss classes when there are plenty of other people to pick from. Bruce Gehrke Laurie Gehrke Corinth
