MACHIAS — In celebration of American Education Week, the community is invited to an open house from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Rose M. Gaffney School. Friends, parents and students are welcome to tour the school, talk to teachers, and partake of refreshments.
Many new things are happening at the school, from computer assisted writing, to drug awareness, to health courses. The walls and halls will be filled with student artwork and many teachers will be on hand in their classrooms to chat and answer questions.
Information will be available about Junior Great Books, Gifted and Talented, and other innovative programs.
In addition, a book fair will be taking place in the school library. It will be an opportunity for parents and children to discover the pleasures of reading together.
Those attending also will have a chance to win a turkey and help support the arts at the Rose Gaffney School. Proceeds from the turkey raffle will go toward the purchase of a kiln for student ceramics.
The celebration of American Education Week is sponsored by the Unified School Association, a parent-teacher-community group that promotes excellence in elementary education in Machias.
