Wright’s clutch homer fuels Van Buren win

VAN BUREN – Chanel Wright smashed a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning give Van Buren a 6-5 high school baseball win over Hodgdon Tuesday.

Pitcher Chris Smith recorded nine strikeouts for Van Buren, improving his recored to 7-0. Phil Smith hit a solo home run in the second and Zach Cote hit a two-run single in the third.

Hodgdon’s Chris Stewart notched an RBI double, and Brian Carton hit a single in the fourth that drove in a run.

Madawaska 16, Wisdom 3

At Madawaska, Marc Garcia went the distance, scattering three hits and fanning four, to lift the host Owls by Wisdom of St. Agatha in a mercy rule-shortened five-inning contest.

Madawaska backed Garcia with a 15-hit onslaught, highlighted by brothers Bryan and Alex Daigle. Bryan Daigle pounded out two singles and three RBIs and Alex Daigle added a double, single, and two RBIs. Eliot Hebert and Denis Cyr contributed two singles apiece.

Troy Guerette paced Wisdom with a run-scoring double. Andy Gervais and Brad Picard both singled.

At Calais, Joey Footer’s two-run double highlighted a four-run fourth-inning rally that propelled the host Blue Devils by Washington Academy of East Machias.

James Macdonald added an RBI single and Chris Leavitt singled during the fourth. Footer finished the day with another single and Leavitt also had another single. Jeremy Dow recorded the complete-game victory, striking out five and walking just one.

For the Raiders, Nick Reynolds rapped two singles and two RBIs. Jeff Look chipped in with a pair of singles and an RBI.

Woodland 14, Lee Academy 9

At Woodland, Chris McAlpine earned a complete-game victory on the mound and pounded out a double and a single to pace the Dragons by visiting Lee Academy.

Matt Lord, Derek Bailey and Andrew Knapp contributed to the Woodland offense with two singles each.

For the Pandas, Chris Cole belted a three-run homer in the fourth. Jack Downing added a double and a single.

At Houlton, pitcher Josh Berry struck out 10 in six innings for the Shiretowners.

Houlton’s Stevie Dow and Billy Washburn recorded a double, a single and two RBIs apiece.

Seth McCrossin led Caribou with two singles.

Katahdin splits

At Sherman Station, Nate Conley scattered six hits, striking out 11 and walking three, as Bangor Christian beat Katahdin 8-3 in the first game.

In the nightcap, Katahdin’s Lance Cunningham and Doug Atkinson scattered four hits over six innings as the Cougars upended Highview Christian of Charleston 13-3.

In the opener, Tyler Wilson’s RBI single keyed a tie-breaking two-run rally in the third and Noah Sargent belted a three-run double in the four-run fourth.

Sargent also had a pair of singles and drove in four runs, Wilson had three singles and Matt Conley singled twice.

Chris McNally’s double and RBI singles by Jerrick Hanson and Chris Robinson paced Katahdin.

In the second game, Chris Robinson drove in four runs with a two-run triple and two singles as Katahdin triumphed.

Josh Roy doubled and singled for Katahdin with Travis Robinson, Justin Stevens and Mike Lane contributing two base hits each. Stevens had two RBIs while Roy, Travis Robinson and Lane had one each.

David Day tripled for Highview Christian.

Karam also had a triple in the game, Willy Baird doubled and singled and Anderson singled twice.

Jim Lister singled for Nokomis.

At Mount Desert Island, senior righty Lucas Leathers spun a three-hitter, striking out five and walking three, for his second win in four decisions and Derek Strout’s two-run double keyed a five-run second-inning rally that broke the game open.

Brad Dalton and Brandon Colbeth had RBI singles in the second.

Strout had two singles to go with his double; Dalton and Colbeth had two singles each with Dalton collecting two RBIs. David Zabala also singled twice.

Matt Boles tripled and singled and drove in the lone run for Ellsworth.

At Madawaska, the Owls kept their undefeated season intact with the victory over visiting Wisdom of St. Agatha.

Madawaska pounded out 13 hits and committed just one error in the field to run its string of wins to 14. Kay Gerard led the way with two sirun its string of wins to 14. At Van Buren, Sara Quint chalked up a home run, double and single to help the Hawks gain the win over the host Crusaders.

Danielle Fitzpatrick was Hodgdon’s only other repeat hitter, registering a double and a single.

Stacey Myrick and Kristy Wright spearheaded the Van Buren attack with two singles each.

At Houlton, Sarah Beasley belted a three-run homer and Valerie Lenentine and Kristen Child had two singles apiece in a nine-run fifth-inning rally that erased a 6-0 deficit and helped the Shires beat Caribou.

Beasley, Child and Lenentine paced Houlton’s 21-hit attack as Beasley had a pair of singles to go with her homer, Child had four singles and an RBI and Lenentine had three base hits.

Erica McGary, Danielle Hagerman, Emily Cole and Nichole Botting contributed two singles each. Hagerman had two RBIs with McGary and Botting notching one each.

Megan Cole-Karagory had a triple, two singles and two RBIs for Caribou. Leah Drew had three singles and an RBI, Liz Andrews had two base hits and an RBI and Sabrina Butler and Ashley Monahan each singled twice.

At Calais, Lanna Martin’s RBI triple in the sixth inning drove in the run that held Calais in front of Washington Academy.

Martin had previously notched a single. Brielle Daggett contributed an RBI single.

Miranda Fergerson hit a triple, a double, a single and drove in three runs for Washington Academy. Katie Kurz hit two singles and triple with one run batted in.

At Woodland, Ashley Beaulieu blasted a triple, double and single to power the visiting Pandas by the Dragons.

Ashley Linscott aided the cause with two singles and a double while Crystal Moors added a double.

Michealene Seavey led Woodland with two doubles and a single. Nikki Lazzaro pitched in with a double.

Bangor Christian sweeps Katahdin

At Sherman Station, Lari Sobey and Renee Mick paced the Patriots at the mound and at the plate as Bangor Christian posted a doubleheader sweep of the host Cougars.

The Patriots captured the first game 5-3 and won the second game 8-4.

Sobey earned a complete game win in the first game, striking out 10, and relieved Mick in the sixth inning of the second game. Sobey also had a double and a single in the first game, and Mick poked a key RBI single during the Patriots’ three-run fifth in the first game.

In the first game, Meredith Moores contributed to the Bangor Christian offense with a double and single.

Morgan Anderson led Katahdin with two doubles.

In the second game, Lisa Phinney plated three singles to highlight the Patriot charge. Nicole Pelletier and Danielle Miller each had a pair of singles.

For the Cougars, Lacey Willett and Megan Libby both hit run-scoring doubles.

At Hermon, Briana Bruce recorded an inside-the-park home run, a single and four RBIs to lift the host Hawks over Foxcroft Academy.

Tonya Laughlin contributed to Hermon’s 16-hit effort with a pair of two-run doubles. Jesse Poole came hit three singles and Amy Porter had two doubles.

For the Ponies, Sherrie Zimmerman belted a home run, two doubles, and four RBIs. Mandi Murray registered a double and a single and Alyssa Snow poked two singles.

At Mount Desert, Hiedi Chan rapped a two-run single to cap the scoring in the fourth inning and propel the Eagles past the Trojans.

Mallory Patten tossed a one-hitter, but eight walks helped MDI stay close.

Jodie Merchant added a double, two singles, and two RBIs for Ellsworth. Chan also had another single.

Sarah Miller picked up the lone hit for MDI, a single in the third inning.
