Michael Carosi of Bowdoin College in Brunswick has been selected as a first-team All-American by the American Hockey Coaches’ Association.

Only six Division III players from across the country were accorded first-team recognition.

Carosi, a senior captain for the Polar Bears, finished his impressive career among the school’s all-time scoring leaders with 124 points. He closed his career with 13 goals and 34 assists during his senior season.

“Michael has had a career year that is really deserving of this kind of award,” said Bowdoin coach Terry Meagher. “To be named first-team All-American is an extraordinary accomplishment and it’s a positive reflection on him and the way he plays the game.”

The Warwick, R.I., native previously had been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was nominated for the AHCA Division III Player of the Year Award.

The last Bowdoin player to be named a first-team All-American was Charlie Gaffney in 1995. He also hailed from Warwick, R.I.

Luchini, Rybalko at NCAA meet

Louie Luchini of Ellsworth and Viktoriya Rybalko of the University of Maine capped successful seasons over the weekend at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships at Fayetteville, Ark.

Luchini, a junior at Stanford University, finished eighth in the men’s 5,00-meter run. Luchini ran the 3.1-mile distance in 14 minutes, 11.15 seconds. He was 11th at the distance and won All-American honors as a sophomore.

Rybalko leaped 39 feet, 33/4 inches on her second jump of the competition to take 16th. She qualified for the meet by leaping 42 feet in the America East Championships on Feb. 16.

Rybalko, who is from Zaporzhye, Ukraine, is the first UMaine woman to qualify for the NCAA championships since Patty McCormick in 1994-95.

Kovenock swimming at nationals

Kate Kovenock of Orono, a freshman at Connecticut College, will compete in the NCAA Division III Swimming Championship that begins today at Wooster, Ohio.

Kovenock is expected to compete in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events at the nationals. She won the 50 free with a time of 24.06 and took the 100 free in 52.22 in winning both races at the recent New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship at Williamstown, Mass.

Her 100 freestyle effort set a NESCAC Championship meet record. Kovenock finished third in the 200 in a national qualifying time of 1:55.63.

Kovenock was a four-time winner of the Most Outstanding Swimmer Award at the Class B state championship meet.

Marquez shines at Drew U.

Sarah Marquez of Orono had an outstanding freshman season at Drew University in Madison, N.J.

The former Orono High standout was the leading scorer for the Rangers, who finished the season with an 11-14 record. Marquez averaged 15.2 points per game, but missed the last eight games of the season after suffering a broken hand.

Despite the injury, Marquez led Drew with 47 steals (2.9 per game) and ranked third with 47 assists (2.9 apg). She was the Rangers’ best free-throw shooter (81 percent) and 3-point shooter (.394).

Marquez also pulled down 3.8 rebounds per contest.
