Susi basket lifts MCI past Orono Huskies advances to quarterfinals

PITTSFIELD – Mike Susi scored on a baseline drive with five seconds remaining to lift No. 5 Maine Central Institute to a 46-44 Class B prelim win over No. 12 Orono in schoolboy basketball action Tuesday night.

Sindre Vad led the Huskies with 14 points and Andrew St. Clair scored 13.

Daryl Watson and Mike Ulrich tossed in 11 points each for Orono. Derek Sinclair added 10.

At East Sullivan, the Tigers managed to hold onto a small lead most of the way to edge the Knights.

Mike Hardy powered No. 6 Sumner with a game-high 28 poitns and eight rebounds. Jamey Polk scored 11.

Steven Knapp led a balanced effort for No. 11 Narraguagus of Harrington with 15 points. Jason Snider netted 13, Luke Shaw provided 12 and Brandon Emerson -added 11.

At Lee Monday night, the Pandas went on a 14-0 scoring run in the last four minutes of the first quarter after trailing 7-0 to set the tone for the game’s remainder.

Matt Corbin paced the winners with 19 points and Frank Severance added 14. Dustin Pickering and Brian Ripley each added 10 points and Ripley grabbed 15 rebounds.

Lucien Longlais scored 12 points for the Eagles, Adam McPherson netted 11 and Daniel Buckley put in 10.

Clapp finished with 21 points for the winners. Ryan Hutchins had 19 and Brian Smith registered 12 points and 14 rebounds. Duane Ledien and Nick Henry combined for 18 more points.

Delany Wilkes had 21 points for 15th-seeded Mattanawcook. Jonathan Carney had 18 and Andrew Weatherbee and Fred Pete collaborated for 19 points.

At Easton, freshman Josh Madden scored a game-high 27 points, including four three-pointers, and 11th-seeded Bangor Christian led virtually the entire way en route to the upset win over sixth seed Easton.

David Chrisos had 17 points for the winners and Pat McCleary chipped in 13 more.

Ryan Lamoreau led four Bears in double figures with 18 points. Jeff Blackstone, Andrew Perry and Matt Osgood had 16, 15 and 13 respectively and Osgood also had 12 rebounds.

Marcel Chalou dished out six assists.

At Houlton, David Carmichael scored two goals for 6-13-0 Houlton-Hodgdon with assists coming from Lucas Fitzpatrick and Chris Weber. Tyler Hipsley scored the third goal unassisted while Ryan Blanchette stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced.

Corey Beaulieu scored Foxcroft Academy’s goal while Ryan Brooks stopped 32 of 35 shots for the 1-19-0 Ponies.

Orono 5, Maranacook 2

At Kennebec Ice Arena in Augusta, Jake Hedstrom scored three goals for 18-0 Orono while Pat Skall had two goals. Will Toner, Travers Kerr, Eric Gordon and Brian Caggiano all recorded assists while Paul Pangburn stopped 19 of the 21 shots.

Derek Belair scored both of Maranacook’s goals with the assists going to John Hamilton and Seth Emery. Matt Zeh faced 27 shots and stopped 22 for 9-8 Maranacook.
