Clare Tomlinson’s letter (BDN, June 2) explains so simply the results of mass immigration that I did some research on the subject. We contacted the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a Washington think tank, which also referred us to Mainers for Immigration Reform, a state organization.

I was shown the U.S. Census Bureau’s population forecasts for the 20th century and immigration’s part in U.S. population growth. I was shocked at what I found. Tomlinson and an earlier letter writer, Jonette Christian, were not “talking through their hats.” In fact, Tomlinson was moderate in her figure of a future U.S. population of 500 million. According to the census report, that will happen in the lifetime of most people living in America. In the lifetime of our grandchildren the report shows that continuing with present trends, the U.S. population will reach 1.2 billion and today’s immigration rates will be responsible for almost all of it.

Since the statistics also show that a thing called “secondary migration” is causing native-born citizens to flee to the crowded states for the rural areas, we also learned that Maine is already affected.
