BANGOR – Michelle Wells spun a one-hitter Sunday at 14th Street, striking out seven, as Hampden-Orono-Veazie defeated Machias 22-10 and earned the District 3 Little League softball championship in the ages 9-10 division.

Machias had beaten Hampden-Orono-Veazie 21-11 earlier in the day, forcing a second game in the double-elimination tournament.

In the second game, Kate Plowman led Hampden-Orono-Veazie with two singles. Lina Patton, Eva Shannon, Amy Wadleigh and Ashley Gott singled.

For Machias, Megan Look singled.

In the first game, Machias won despite not managing a hit. Kayla Wood had an RBI sacrifice and Rebecca Cox earned the pitching win.

Gott paced Hampden-Orono-Veazie with a double and a single. Plowman contributed two singles and Erin Haggerty poked a double.

At 14th Street in Bangor Saturday, Megan Look belted two doubles and three singles as Machias turned back Old Town in District 3 action.

Kayla Wood pitched in with three singles and Hannah Beal recorded two singles.

Allison Brown led Old Town with a double. Lakin Moulton, Jenna Wiengardner and Lindsey St. Louis all singled.

At Waldo, Waldo County utilized a balanced hitting attack to get by Knox Suburban in District 2 action.

Caleb Ashey and John Wentworth led the way with two singles each. Bobby Seger added a two-run single, while Mike Light, Ross Curry and Danny MacClain all had run-scoring singles. Matt Benjamin contributed a single and scored two runs.

For Knox, Logan Rackiff, Mike Cummons and Jake Holmes all slammed a double and a single.

Bangor 12, Orono-Veazie 3

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor Saturday, Bangor rolled to seven runs in the first inning and never looked back, cruising to the District 3 win over Orono-Veazie.

Payson Nichols paced the first-inning charge with a two-run single. Nichols also notched the victory and improved to 3-0 in the tournament.

Josh Young spearheaded the Bangor offense with four singles. Ryan Willette and Nate Hall both registered two singles and Tyler Heber and Tim Woodcock had a double each. Young and Woodcock had two RBIs apiece.

For Orono-Veazie, Ryan Levesque and Nate Faulstick slammed two singles each.

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor Saturday, Travis Tripp scattered nine hits, striking out nine and walking three, to lift Acadia of Mount Desert Island over Coastal of Blue Hill in District 3.

Tripp improved to 3-0 in the tournament.

Bodie Abbott and Brandon Colbeth each tripled for Acadia. Brian Greenleaf added a double.

For Coastal, Mark Clapp and Andy Wentworth doubled.

At Milbridge, Nichole Leach paced Sunrise with a triple and a single in the District 3 game.

Brittany Smith, Katrina Beal and Chelsey Baker each had a double and a single. Della Newenham tripled.

Ashley Martin and Maureen Capehart both hit a double and a single for Bangor East while Katie Soo added a double.
