Tae kwon do champ donates gold medal

BANGOR – A student and instructor in the Tae Kwon Do USA Program at the Bangor YMCA has donated the goal medal from his 2000 National Forms Championship in Olympic-style tae kwon do to his supporters and instructors.

Christopher Hayes Chambers, 32, presented the plaque encasing his gold medal to Chase Poulsen and Jamie Smith, instructors; to the Bangor YMCA; to Edwards System Technology; to Tee-Rex Imprinters; to Governor’s Restaurant; to Tae Kwon Do USA; and to Bernard Miller of Miller Drug.

Attending the ceremony were several youngsters from the YMCA tae kwon do program, which instructs 130 students each week.

Chambers emphasized that community support contributed to his success and gave him the means to compete for the gold medal. He added that his mother, Linda Chambers, had also supported him in his endeavors. The gold medal will hang in the Bangor YMCA Viner Room. Chambers said he hoped it would be a reminder to his students of the community support and involvement in the lives of Bangor’s youth.

Chambers is the defending Heavyweight Sparring Champion for Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut, and earned second place in the Moncton International Open.

He has been training with the Tae Kwon Do USA Program at the Bangor YMCA for four years.

A 1st Dan Kukkiwon Tae Kwon Do black belt and instructor, he is preparing for the state qualifying competition Saturday in Portland.
