Caribou program aims to assist mentally ill

CARIBOU — The Aroostook Mental Health Center recently opened The Harvest Social Club at its Russ Street Facility to provide a place for recreation and socialization for individuals with serious mental illness.

Four afternoons a week, the doors are open for members to play cards or board games, watch videos and enjoy the company of others. Some refreshments will be provided for free, and soda can be purchased for 20 cents.

Since opening in the spring, The Harvest Social Club has grown to 67 members and averages more than eight member visits each day.

A potluck dinner followed by an organizational meeting is held each month. Members receive a monthly newsletter, which provides information on upcoming events and potential new members.

AMHC serves children, adolescents and adults in crisis in residential and outpatient settings in more than 17 sites throughout the county.
